1. List of Requirements

1.1 Functional Requirements

  • The Surfacesystem Samplingshall Containerstore stores regolith, Mars powder, and rock/probe samples in 2–3 separate compartments (2–3 total), keeping sample types isolated from collection through storage.
  • The robotic arm grabsshall use a scoop tool, which it usestool to collect sample material from the surface and pourdeposit it onto the container's weighing platform. platform.
  • Once loaded, the container weighsshall weigh the total collected sample mass. mass.
  • If the measured mass meets or exceeds the minimum threshold, threshold (100 g), the lid opensshall open via the motormotor, and the material isshall be deposited into one of the compartments;appropriate compartment; the lid shall then closesclose and lock automatically via the motor and locks by default through magnetic caps mounted on the top of the lid and thecontainer base of the container. base.
  • If the measured mass falls below the threshold, threshold (100 g), the motor actuatesshall actuate to open the container and reject the sample rather than storingstore it.

  • The full assembly mustshall fit within the housing dimensions defined for the system.
  • The lid opensshall upopen to a maximum of 90 degrees, and probedegrees.
  • Probe mounting followsshall follow the dimensions specified in the Mars Rover Competition manual .
  • A piezoelectric sensor isshall be integrated for mass measurement, connectedmounted directly to the chassis.
  • The system isshall be fully 3D-printed to satisfy theoverall weight limitations imposed on the overall assembly, and thelimitations.
  • The weighing platform isshall be constrained to a single degree of freedom in Z-translation,translation, keepingensuring the systemplatform remains stationary during measurement and ensuringfor accurate readings.
